How to improve parts quality if you want to use more regrinds?
Plastic regrinds are widely used in injection moulding.
The solution to obtaining good quality parts and increase the usage of regrind is to improve the quality of regrinds. Over-sized regrind and powder would have to be screened off as they are the cause of the problems as illustrated below :
1) Over- sized or Coarse Regrind
a) May choke the feed throat of the moulding machine and give rise to inconsistent feeding of material.
b) As plastics are poor heat conductors, moisture absorbed right inside the big size of regrind is difficult to be got rid off through heating. Therefore, they need extra long hours heating to be dried. Normal drying of 3 to 4 hours in dehumidifying dryer is insufficient and therefore mechanical properties of moulded parts dropped.
2) Fine Powder
a) They tend to aggregate at the feed throat of moulding machine and cause inconsistent feeding of material.
b) Too much fine powder when melted in the plasticising zone of the injection machine will have a reduction in volume and lead to void in the parts or reduction of parts dimension.
Less processing problems, less rejects and higher usage of regrind mean greater profit and this can achieved by control of regrinds quality .
